Fencing, lockboxes and debris containment

Temporary fencing and site security after a fire in Detroit

A burned house draws people: curious neighbors, trespassers and scrappers looking for copper. We fence the property, secure the entries, contain debris piles and keep the site safe and controlled until the repairs are finished.

  • Fencing set on the first visit
  • Controlled access for the job

Quick answer

Temporary fencing and site security in Detroit protects a fire-damaged property while it waits for repairs: chain-link construction fencing around the house or the burned area, every entry boarded or locked with a lockbox for authorized access, and debris piles and dumpsters contained so nothing blows into the street or neighbors' yards. It limits liability, theft and further damage, and shows the insurer the site was protected.

Why a burned house needs more than boarded windows

Board-up closes the openings, but a fire-damaged property still has hazards outside: weakened walls, debris, broken glass, holes in porches and a dumpster that attracts dumping. Children and passers-by can get hurt, and the owner can be held responsible.

Fencing marks the site as a work area and keeps people out. Lockboxes let us, you, your adjuster and the trades get in without leaving a door open. Debris containment keeps the mess on your lot.

Security stays in place for as long as the house is a job site, and we check it after storms or reports of trouble.

How site security is set up

  1. 01

    Walk the site

Hazards, entries, sidewalks and where the dumpster will go.

  2. 02

    Fence it

Chain-link panels on stands, braced, with a lockable gate.

  3. 03

    Secure entries

Boards, hasps and one controlled entry with a lockbox.

  4. 04

    Contain debris

Tarps and fencing around piles and the dumpster.

  5. 05

    Check and maintain

Scheduled and storm checks until the job is finished.

Construction fencing

We set temporary chain-link panels on weighted stands around the house or the damaged part of it, with a lockable gate for the crew and the dumpster. Panels are clamped together and braced against wind, and screened where privacy or blowing debris is a concern.

Where a sidewalk is affected, fencing is set so pedestrians have a safe way past. Fencing is moved as the job moves, for example opened up for a roof crew or a delivery, then closed again at the end of each day.

Entry control and lockboxes

Every exterior door is either boarded or secured with a hasp and padlock, and one entry is set up with a lockbox or keyed lock for access. The code or key goes to you, your adjuster and the trades who need it, and we log who has access.

Basement windows, garage doors and crawlspace openings are checked too, since they are common ways in. If something is tampered with, we repair it and update the access log, with photos for your insurer.

Debris pile containment

Tear-out produces debris faster than a dumpster is swapped, so piles happen. We keep them inside the fenced area, cover them with tarps against wind and rain, and keep them away from sidewalks and neighbors' property lines.

Dumpsters are covered or locked where possible to stop outside dumping, which adds to your cost. Broken glass and nails are swept from the yard and walkways, and the site is cleaned up at the end of the job. Neighbors can call the fire and smoke line if anything blows over the fence, and we come back to deal with it.

How long security stays in place

Fencing and entry control go up on the first visit or the day after, and stay for as long as the house is a job site, usually weeks to months.

When repairs finish, we remove the fencing, sweep the site and return access to you.

Securing fire-damaged properties around Detroit

Many of the burned houses we secure sit empty for weeks or months while claims, estates and permits are settled, and that stretch is when they are most at risk. Storms add to it: the National Weather Service confirmed an EF-2 tornado with 115 mph winds in Grand Blanc, near our head office, and high winds topple unbraced fence panels and scatter debris. We brace fencing against wind and check sites after every major storm across our area.
