Cabinets, countertops and appliance hookups

Rebuilding a kitchen after a fire in Detroit

Kitchens are where most house fires start, and they are the room people miss most while it is gone. Once the grease and soot are cleaned and the burned materials are out, we rebuild the walls, cabinets, counters and hookups so the kitchen works again.

Quick answer

A kitchen rebuild after a fire in Detroit follows the cleanup: burned cabinets, counters and walls come out, framing and wiring are checked and repaired, then new or matched cabinets, countertops, backsplash and flooring go in, and appliances are reconnected by the right trades. We document every item for your claim and schedule the work so you are back to cooking at home as soon as possible.

From burned room to working kitchen

A kitchen fire usually damages more than the stove. Cabinets above the range char or warp, the ceiling and walls take heavy grease-based soot, and the exhaust hood and nearby electrical often need replacing. Firefighting water can reach the floor, the cabinets below and the ceiling of the room underneath.

The rebuild starts only after cleaning and tear-out, so new cabinets do not go in over residue. We check the framing, wiring and plumbing while the walls are open, then rebuild in the order that gets the kitchen usable soonest.

Where cabinets outside the burn area can be cleaned and kept, we say so. Where the kitchen is better rebuilt as a whole so it matches, we explain that too.

What changes the cost of a kitchen rebuild

Kitchen rebuild cost follows how much burned, and the level of finish being replaced.

  1. How much of the kitchen burnedOne run of cabinets costs less than the whole room.
  2. Cabinet match or full replacementMatching old cabinets can be harder than replacing all of them.
  3. Countertop materialLaminate, solid surface and stone differ widely in cost.
  4. Electrical and ventingCircuits, hood and duct repairs add trade work.
  5. Floor and ceilingWater damage to flooring and the ceiling below expands the scope.

Cabinet replacement

Cabinets near the fire are usually replaced; those further away can often be cleaned inside and out and refinished. When only some are replaced, matching door style, finish and hardware to the existing ones is the hard part, and we tell you plainly when an exact match is not possible.

Boxes are set on dry, sound walls and floors, leveled and fastened properly, with doors and drawers adjusted before countertops are templated. Hidden areas behind and under cabinets are cleaned and sealed before installation, because that is where grease soot hides after a kitchen fire.

Countertops

Laminate counters near the heat often blister or delaminate and are replaced. Stone counters can crack from heat or be stained by grease soot; some can be cleaned and polished, others need replacing. Countertops are measured after cabinets are set, so they fit the final layout.

Backsplash tile and grout that took smoke are cleaned where possible and replaced where the grout is stained deep or tile cracked. The sink, faucet and garbage disposal are reinstalled with the counters, and a plumber checks the connections.

Appliance hookups

Range, cooktop, hood, dishwasher, microwave and refrigerator connections are checked and redone as needed. An electrician confirms the circuits serving the kitchen, and gas connections are handled by a qualified gas technician before the range is used.

The range hood and its duct are replaced when the fire went up through them, since grease inside the duct is a fire risk in its own right. Appliances that were in the fire are listed for your claim with brand, model and serial numbers, and new ones are installed once the space is ready.

Rebuilding mid-century kitchens around Detroit

In Warren, most homes were built in the 1960s, with another 12,338 from the 1950s, and a lot of Macomb County kitchens from that era still have their original layout even after a few updates. Those kitchens tend to be compact, with soffits above the cabinets and wiring that was extended over the years. When one burns, the rebuild is a good time to correct circuits and venting while the walls are open, and we scope that with you and your adjuster.

How long a kitchen rebuild takes

After cleaning and tear-out, a kitchen with stock cabinets can often be rebuilt in a few weeks. Custom cabinets, stone counters and appliance lead times can stretch that.

We give you a schedule once the scope is agreed and cabinets are ordered, and we keep one working sink or temporary setup available where the house is still lived in.
